    Still

One week ago 9 minutes changed a lot – 9 minutes that felt way longer – 9 minutes that we only knew 24 hours later that it have been 9 minutes.

Whenever I step out of my house I see the growing fields of flowers, candles and notes – one of the busiest places in Vienna has become quiet and still. There are many people around coming to say goodbye and to remember. Honouring people they probably didn´t know but whom we will remember for a long time.

“The quiet sense of something lost” – Tennyson

grieving and remembering in viennaThe Viennese is often called a bit rude and unfriendly, a true testament of the cliché of the “Wiener Grant” (the grumpy Viennese) but in times like these, we move closer together (while staying socially distanced of course). Sharing smiles, helping out relighting candles and just try to be a bit nicer overall.

Its been a quiet week here around the Schwedenplatz and will probably stay still for a while.

But there also have been reasons to celebrate, not only the countless heroes of Monday night but also a new president and fabulous vice-president of the USA. And today we learned that one of the Covid19 vaccines is in the very last stages of being approved. On a more personal note, I booked a rental car for my next Scottish adventure in the upcoming summer.

Life goes on, it´s on us to stand against any kind of racism and fascism and reach out a hand to people in need.

  • Summer 2020 postponed to 2021

In a few days I was supposed to start this year’s summer in Scotland – 6 weeks on Shetland, Orkney, Ullapool, Lewis and Harris, Skye and then slowly back home via Edinburgh.

The sheperd´s hut at the end of the road in the Scottish Highlands.

But like many other travellers this year I had to postpone to next year. Luckily I was able to change most of the dates of my booked Airbnbs to next year and only had to cancel two as my plans will slightly change. I added a week in Assynt, just had to after going over my pictures from last year.

A view of the stunning Scittish gem Assynt and Lochinver in North-West Scotland.

Speaking of last year, the post about Urquhart Castle was the last one from My British Summer 2019. It would have been perfect timing to start now with my next journey, but I´ll find some other things and stories to fill the time until I´ll be back in Scotland.

People are back in Vienna, even though there are still way fewer tourists than usual at this time and I´ve been lucky with the summer so far. May & June have been quite old-fashioned right on the average temperature and no big heat waves so far.

I´ll be exploring some bits and pieces in Vienna, will spend a few days in Gars am Kamp and will see what else turns up. After being away from Vienna for the last three summers it might be quite nice to be here this year.

Wherever you are, have an amazing summer and be a tourist in your home!

  • Around the world

I haven´t been everywhere, but it´s on the list! (Susan Sontag)

When planning my next adventures I always love to use  “real” maps – there is just something magical about marking a map on paper and drawing in routes and places of interest. And as I´ve always dreamed of owning my own big hanging world map I was more than happy to take the offer of Weltkarte, to test one of their beautiful maps.

The hardest part of the process was probably selecting just one from the many beautiful options to choose from. I was really torn between the textile ones and the one printed on wood. And do I want a vintage map or an old looking one… Weltkarten offers many different options!

In the end, I went with the textile one and the round wood, I think it´s the one that would fit best in my apartment.

When the selection is finally done, the rest is easy. Choose the size and the finish, pay and a few days later it will be delivered with DHL.

The printing looks lovely and will also fit some little “flags” marking my upcoming travels – here is a close up from Europe. This is the textile one in “lighter colours”. And looking at the UK reminds me of my next adventure this summer all the time and just makes me happy!

    Prints

I´ll probably bring back tons of new pictures from Yorkshire, the Scottish Borders, Aberdeenshire, the Northern Highlands and Loch Less and can´t wait to share many of them. Did you know that I also offer prints?

Printed on fine art paper, signed and in limited editions. Let me know when you’re interested in getting some landscapes or maybe one or more from my collaboration with fashion designer Irina Hofer? Currently also seen on and in WIENER magazine.

For landscapes or more dramatic portraits, I could also imagine printing them on wood, that might be a very interesting way of showcasing them and just something very special.
