  • Happy Potter-versary

Today 20 years ago “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” – the first book of the Harry Potter series was published. And it wasn´t that easy for J.K. Rowling to find a publisher, her book was rejected many times, even trying it with a male pseudonym didn´t help. But we all know what happened after Harry hit the shelves – it became a huge success, was translated into 79 languages, people of all ages waited in lines for hours when a new volume was released and then there were the movies. And Rowling herself, somewhen between having that idea on a trainride to becoming the second richest woman after the Queen, she also became kind of a heroine herself not only on twitter.

While writing her first books Rowling followed the tradition of many other writer before her – it was cheaper to buy a cup of tea or coffee than paying the heating at home, so “The Elephant House” and “Nicholson’s Café”(now a chinese restaurant) in Edinburgh became her writing space.

In July I´m going to visit some more places linked to Hermione, Harry and Ron like the viaduct the Hogwarts Express travels on and can´t wait. Until then some memories from my last time in London.

  • Around London

I spent most of my time in London walking around, visiting old favourite places and discovering new ones – sometimes with my camera sometimes just using my phone. Be prepared for a little ride around town…

St. Dunstan in the East  – built around 1100, the church was seriously damaged by the Great Fire in 1666 and was “patched up” again. After being damaged during the Blitz in 1941 it was decided to not rebuild it and turned into a public garden in 1967.

  • Welcome to Hogwarts

…or almost Hogwarts – the WB Harry Potter Studios in London are probably as close as one can get to Hogwarts outside the books and movies. Maybe exept riding the Hogwarts Express – there is a tour in Scotland offering exactly that, riding a steam train and visiting some locations from the Harry Potter movies and “Game of Thrones”. (and yes, it´s on the neverending bucket list!)

After a little time queueing and waiting next to Harrys “room” under the stairs, we all were greeted by Hermione, Ron and Harry aka Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliff who all kind of grow up in these studios and more than ready to enter into the Great Hall – they made it spellbinding, I almost felt like a young 11 year old wizards entering this hall for the first time.

Little tiny wizards puppets flying around christmas trees, huge loads of festive “foods” on the tables and the original costumes of young Harry and his schoolmates.

From here on on we were invited to explore the studios on our own and there was so much to see and admire. On average one spends about 3 hours here, so it´s better not to be in a rush, take your time!
