Going to Liverpool wasn´t planned – but when I had realized how near it was to Manchester & Lancaster it was an easy decision to cut Lancaster one day short, hop on the train and go to the birthplace of the Beatles. After being greeted by Queen Victoria it was love at first sight!

The train brought me right to the city centre and it was just a short walk to my hotel and to the Royal Albert Docks. Filled with people and food trucks and many more things – even so, it was raining most of the time.

The Royal Albert Docks are a complex of warehouses and dock buildings opened in 1846. They were the first buildings in the UK completely built from cast iron, brick and stone – no wood at all was used. That wasn´t the only thing that made them quite revolutionary: ships were loaded and unloaded directly from or to the warehouses. In 1848 it featured the world first hydraulic cranes.

Being damaged in the World War II the future of the docks was uncertain and it was closed in 1972. It took about ten years until a development corporation was set up, the dock newly developed and reopened in 1984. Today the docks house multiple shops, restaurants, pups, Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Experience – my next stop!

The museum is nicely done but doesn´t tell you anything new (if you´ve been a Beatles fan since you were four years old) and of course, it was filled with people. Maybe that was the reason I went through quite quickly and moved on along the Pier Head.

The whole area seems to be newly developed and restored and is just stunning! There are some museums on the way, like how a house looked during the Blitz on average, a maritime museum, Music Experience, memorials and much more different things.

The best way to look at the waterfront is from a boat – or better said the ferry.

The waterfront runs along the river Mersey and really shows off the impressive (private) and commercial architecture of the city. Warehouses, docks and stunning buildings inspired by skyscrapers in Chicago!

The warehouse on the left is the new Titanic Hotel, White Star Line was based in Liverpool and the warehouse on the right is undergoing renovations at the moment. That clock tower is also super important and special but I forgot why.

    Royal Albert Dock

“The Three Graces” – the Liver building on the left was once Europes tallest building in 1911 and was inspired by Chicago’s skyline.

The Copper Liver Birds (best guess = cormorants) on top, by George Cowper and the Bromsgrove Guild face outwards to the river and inwards to the city – and rise to 18 feet. Should they leave their perch, it’s said, the city will fall. They’ll certainly leave a nasty gash in the pavement. (Liverpool Underlined)

The one in the middle was the former office of the Cunard Line and was inspired by Italian Palazzos. And third in line, the Port Of Liverpool building, featuring “Eight octagonal towers surround a dome once destined for an ambitious Catholic cathedral”, the dome was added later in the design process to have the building standing out more. The Fab Four from behind – too many people taking selfies on the other side – and I like how they look out on the waterfront and the river.

On my way back to the hotel I did a little detour around the Cavern Area – or like I called it the Beatles quarter!

Liverpool is such a vibrant and interesting city, I just have to come back – there is so much more to see and do!

    Ciao Positano!

I think it was about here, that the already narrow coastal road got even more narrow with all the parked cars. At least the slow driving and often standing made it possible to enjoy the view and take a few pictures.

And from the other side – looking for a parking space I passed the city by driving by and decided on this point to turn around and just drive into Positano. Which was a good idea as there were a lot of garages – I just took the first one and walked the rest down.

Picture perfect Positano – main “actor” of many movies and the “front cover” of the Amalfi Coast. Stunningly beautiful (esp when seen a little bit from afar) it´s the centre of attraction for many, many people.

The fashionista history runs deep – moda Positano was born here in the ’60s and the town was the first in Italy to import bikinis from France. (Lonely Planet)

Positano was a sleepy and poor fishing village until the mid-century and started to attract larger numbers of tourists in the early 1950ies, especially after the publication of John Steinbeck’s essay in Harpers Bazaar 1953:

“Positano bites deep”, Steinbeck wrote. “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” (Wikipedia)

Movies and celebrities on vacation made Positano to a dream destination for many!

Positano has been featured in several films, including Only You (1994), and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), as well as more recently in Kath & Kimderella (2012) and being mentioned in the 2009 musical film Nine in the song “Cinema Italiano”. …

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones wrote the song “Midnight Rambler” in the cafes of Positano while on vacation. (Wikipedia)

When I did research my trip to the Causeway Coast pictures of this street always popped up – it was impossible to miss them! Another location from “Game of Thrones” and probably as often photographed as the Giant´s Causeway! I assume James Stuart didn´t expect this to happen when he planted these more than 150 breech trees along the entrance road to his estate in 1775.

Even so, I came in the evening there was quite a few people around. This actually is a normal road (Bregagh Road), so be aware that there might be traffic! The cars you see in the picture weren´t traffic, but just people who were too lazy to use the free parking next to the hotel – just two minutes walk away from the road.

Please use the parking at the Hedges Hotel, it´s a lovely short walk through the Gracehill House estate to reach the beech-lined road. And as I just learned, traffic has been banned from this part of the road last October, I´ve just been one and a half month too early!

James Stuart built Gracehill House in 1775,

the opposing rows of beech trees were meant to create an impressive, scenic road leading up to their estate, Gracehill House. However as the trees matured they began to bend over the road and their upper branches intermingled creating a shadowy arboreal tunnel. (Atlas Obscura)

After a lovely walk through the tunnel (and some waiting until most of the people were gone) I was ready to drive back to the coast and my B&B – and a short stop to admire White Park Bay Beach in the sunset! And I was ready to enjoy the Perseid Meteor Showers. I´ve never seen so many falling stars, having no light pollution really helps!
