  • Hello again!

Spring has sprung here in Vienna and somehow the first quarter of the year is over – time is flying, even so not a lot is happening!

For the last two weeks, the lovely smell of wild garlic is hanging over the Prater and yesterday I saw the very first blooming cherry blossoms. The days are longer again, the windows are open and I am listening to the sounds from below.

Photo stillife with some spring blooms, getting spring inside your home

I remember how quiet it was outside one year ago and how I was waiting for these few sounds to remind myself that there were still other people out there. Vienna is entering Lockdown 4, hopefully, it will be the last one and vaccinations will be become quicker and quicker. Fingers crossed!

I remain optimistic and continue to plan my Scottish Summer – the one I rolled over to this year from last one.

A view of the stunning Scittish gem Assynt and Lochinver in North-West Scotland.

I am planning to explore Shetland, Orkney, Assynt (see picture above), Ullapool, Lewis & Harris and Skye with a few days of Edinburgh and Glasgow at the beginning and the end. Fingers crossed it will be possible this year, but I am hopeful!

Until then I will continue my daily walks around Vienna and exploring my hometown even more and more. It is a good time to visit museums (when they are a open) and other usually tourist places as they are pretty empty.

Have a great April and be healthy! Or like we say in Vienna: “G´sund bleibn!”

  • Empty Vienna – Part II

    Empty Vienna – Part II

Usually, these are the times of the year when there is a constant smell of mulled wine and punch over Vienna. The first Christmas markets are open and you hear a lot of Italian, Russian, English and other languages on the streets.

While Vienna is emptier than usual in this time of the year, the Christmas lights till sparkle and bring joy.

But as the rest of the year has been, Christmas time 2020 is different – Austria (like most of Europe or the rest of the world) is in the middle of lockdown 2 and lots of shops had to close. Vienna might not be as empty as in spring but compared to normal times there are very few people around.

Christmas markets will open on December 7th – the earliest and we´ll still don´t know if it will happen at all. Many coffee houses offer not only coffee and cakes to take away but also mulled wine and punch. Grab a cup (or better bring your own cup) and enjoy a walk under the lights.
