  • Ephesus Museum and Vienna from above

When the Igersvienna and Igersaustria invited me to a tour of the Ephesus Museum I was most tempted to join because we would go on the roof of the NHM (Natural History Museum) afterwards and that´s something I´ve been wanting to do for a very, very long time!

But Mr Georg Plattner, the director of the antique collection and the Ephesos museum made it so interesting that we didn´t want to leave again and explore even more.

Ephesos, located in present-day Turkey, was one of the most important cities of antiquity. It was here that the Artemis Temple, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, stood; the city was also the home of Heraclitus, as well as of one of the largest early-Christian communities. Roman times saw Ephesos became capital of the Province of Asia, with around 200,000 inhabitants.

Since 1895, Austrian archaeologists have been excavating the ruins of Ephesos. Up to the year 1906, numerous recovered objects of high quality were removed to Vienna, objects which can be seen today at the Ephesos Museum, an annex to the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities. (KHM)

It´s just a short walk across the Heldenplatz and Maria Theresia Platz to reach our second destination, the Natural History Museum. And again we were shown some of the highlights of the museum, the oldest collections dating back more than 250 years, founded by Franz I Stephan of Lorraine, Maria Theresa’s husband.

One of the most famous pieces is probably this little lady, the Venus von Willendorf. The figurine is about 29.000 years old and was found in 1908 near Willendorf.

  • My Monet Moment – Albertina

A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit the current Monet Exhibition in the Viennese Albertina after hours – an empty museum, 150 artworks and a few Instagrammers.

This exhibition focus on colours and Monets treatment of colour.

Monet’s light and colors change on the canvas in accordance with nature’s constant transformation, as well as the diversity of atmospheric impressions that the painter gleaned from his motifs—and it was his urge to capture this diversity that moved him to paint many such motifs in series.

  • Danube Auen National Park

Lying in between Vienna and Bratislava the National Park Donau Auen spans

over 9,300 hectares area, the park protects the last remaining major wetland environment in Central Europe. For a distance of just over 36 km, the Danube flows freely and is the lifeline of the national park. The dynamic rise and fall of water levels – sometimes up to 7 meters – mean that the wetlands landscape is constantly recreated and reformed. In this way, the flow of the Danube creates habitats for a large number of plants and animals. (Donauauen.at)

One of the loveliest ways to visit the park is going by boat. The “Nationalpark Boot” leaves every day at 9 AM from Schwedenplatz and brings you right into the park. It´s also a great possibility to see Vienna from the Donaukanal – but we left the city behind quite soon and reached the end of the Donauinsel, where the Donaukanal joins the Danube again.

When we had reached the end of our boat tour a ranger already waited for us and during a little walk through the Au he told about their work to protect the area, the animals living here and many more things.

We had to say goodbye to the Danube jungle and start our journey back to Vienna – upstream it takes about two hours.
