  • Officina Profumo Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella

Whenever you´re in Florence you don´t want to miss one of the oldest and probably most beautiful pharmacies of the world! La Officina Profumo Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella – founded shortly after 1221 by Dominican friars who made and sold balms, medications out of medicinal herbs grown in the monastic gardens.

In 1612 the pharmacie was well know even outside of Florence and opened to the public.

The Old Apothecary, now a herbalist’s shop, was used for the sale and display of products between 1612 and 1848, while the historic Sales Room, restructured in 1848, was the place in which the company’s customers were welcomed when the increasing fame of the pharmacy made the provision of a room for entertaining customers a must. (Museums in Florence)

Today they offer a wide range of products from soaps to colognes, medical liqueurs made after the old recipes. Even some fragrance quite similar to the “acqua della regina” once created for the loyal costumer Catherine de’ Medici.

  • Vintage Stadl – Pop Up Shop

I love inner court- and backyards – you never know what you may find. Sometimes there are real jewels hidden behind the doors and walls. Today I visited the Pop Up Shop by Vintage Stadl at Berggasse 5 in Vienna. It´s a beautiful building from the outside, elegant entrance and hallway and then there is this gorgeous neo-baroque hall in the courtyard, a treasure!

The building was erected in 1825 by Josef Klee by order of Johann Niernsee. First it was called “Zum Schweizer” and later on “Zum silbernen Brunnen” – this neo-baroque hall seems to have been built in 1890 and was used as a restaurant, the courtyard served as “Schanigarten”. I found an old image (postcard) from the restaurant and the garden with lots of tables while looking for some information on that place. (Try google image search: “Franz Gilly Zum silbernen Brunnen”)

In the last years it has been used by a printer and was filled with huge machines, but renovation works will start soon and an event agency will bring back it´s almost original use as a venue.

  • Miss Lillys Hats at DIVA Boutique

Who hasn´t braided wreaths out of daisies as a child? I loved to do this and wore my little flower crowns with pride! But two years ago at the very first Vintage Salon Vienna I discovered a real artist at building the most beautiful vintage flowers crowns: Miss Lillys Hats – lucky for me, their booth was opposite from mine and I more or less admired their work for two whole days.

Niki, the designer behind Miss Lillys Hats, is hunting down vintage flowers from around the world, restores them and designs all these beautiful flower crowns, closely observed by Miss Lilly – the cat (and mastermind). Every unique piece is done by hand and lots of love!

Whenever there is an opportunity to visit them I take it, like last week at the “Boutique of contemporary lifestyle” organized by the austrian magazine DIVA. This time Niki not only showed her flower crowns but also a new small collection of hand-stiched cashmere cardigans and shawls. These pieces are not only beautiful to look at but so cosy! I could´t stop cuddling with them.
