  • Popfest at Karlsplatz

Slowly, sometimes very, very, very slowly but steady Vienna is changing, even if some might deny it, it is happening. Until some years Karlsplatz was know to be the place to buy drugs and use them right there. It was kind of a lost place. But about ten years ago a project called “Kunstplatz Karlsplatz” was initiated to redesign the park area and promote art projects on Karlsplatz. In last years it was transformed to an area of cultural exchange and became a lovely location for festivals, concerts, exhibitions, open air cinema and lots of other events. There is always something going on Karlsplatz, even if you´re just sitting at the large pond in front of Karlskirche and watching the ducks floating by.

Today Karlsplatz became an open air concert stage again, the Popfest is held for the fifth time. There will be around 60 concerts outdoors on Karlsplatz and indoors in neighboring cultural institutions, such as the Wien Museum, Künstlerhaus and the Vienna University of Technology. • Vienna wasn´t just a city, it was a tone

“Vienna wasn’t just a city, it was a tone that either one carries forever in one’s soul or one does not. It was the most beautiful thing in my life. I was poor, but I was not alone, because I had a friend. And Vienna was like another friend. When it rained in the tropics, I always heard the voice of Vienna. And at other times too. Sometimes deep in the virgin forests I smelled the musty smell of the entrance hall in Hietzing. Music and everything I loved was in the stones of Vienna, and in people’s glances and their behavior, the way pure feelings are part of one’s very heart. You know when the feelings stop hurting. Vienna in winter and spring. The allés in Schönbrunn. The blue light in the dormitory at the academy, the great white stairwell with the baroque statue. Morning ridings in the Prater. The mildew in the riding school. I remember all of it exactly, and I wanted to see it again…”
