Walking through Port Wemyss in the Isle of Islay

It is just a short walk from Portnahavn to Port Wemyss – a lovely fishing village on the southern tip of the Rhinns of Islay.

Opposite the Rhinns of Islay lighthouse – I followed the “Path of the Fisherman”. A lovely coastal path with information about Port Wemyss and the area.

  • Welcome to Islay

Good bye Tiree and Hello Islay!

    Good Bye Tiree

Islay was the last stop of my Hebridean summer. Islay is the southern island of the Inner Hebrides, also known as “The Queen of the Hebrides.” Islay is the fifth-biggest  Scottish island.

My neighbours in Islay - a peacock and chickens

I arrived in my lovely cottage pretty much in the middle of Islay and was greeted by my neighbours—a very shy peacock and very curious chicken.

    Portnahaven

My first little excursion brought me to Portnahaven – a lovely small town on the upper southern tip of Islay. Don´t miss this little gem!

I parked outside of town and walked to the main street. Portnahaven is a fishing village, filled with colourful boats and white cottages.

I spent some time sitting here and watching the seals bobbling around in the harbour. A perfect spot to watch the boats and seals go by.

Portnahaven was planned and built during the 19th century with fishing and crofting as the villagers’ main employment. (Islayinfo.com)

The village is built around the sheltered harbour and couldn´t be more picturesque.

  • Dùn Mòr Bhalla – Vaul Broch

Walking to Dùn Mòr Broch in the Isle of Tiree

Let´s go for a little walk and visit one (of two?) brochs in the Isle of Tiree. Dún Mór Bhalla – Vaul Broch lies on the north coast of Tiree.

Walking to Dùn Mòr Broch in the Isle of Tiree

This is the best example of a broch on Tiree and the only one that has been excavated. The broch was built in about 60AD as an emergency refuge and then inhabited for 200-300 years. (Isle of Tiree)

Following that time it was used as accommodation only intermittently until the Vikings arrived. In later years the walls were lowered to near the present height and the interior was converted into a farmhouse with outhouses built outside the walls. (Isle of Tiree)

It is a short and easy walk to the broch, but might get a bit muddy in places.
