On my way back in direction of Eilean Donan Castle, I made one more stop at the stunning village of Plockton on the coast of Lochalsh.

This small lochside village is one of the most attractive in Scotland, an idyllic place in an idyllic setting. A row of neatly painted cottages hugs the shoreline following the curve of the tiny harbour. Palm trees line the main street and the whole scene is framed by a landscape of islands, heather and pine. Across the harbour the views are of white cottages on a craggy point, with the mountains of Wester Ross in the background. It comes as no surprise to find that Plockton is a haven for artists. During the time of the “clearances” in the early 17th century, the landlord Sir Hugh Innes decided to offer tenants cleared from inland areas and alternative to emigration: they could resettle to a small fishing port he was developing under the name of “Plocktown”. Thanks to the herring boom the town grew to 500 people living there. Unfortunately, the fish changed their migration pattern and fishing on a large scale was never resumed.

Today Plockton offers a variety of hotels and restaurants and is a fixed point on the map for tourists to enjoy boat trips, walking and a very special light.

I continued my way along the Applecross Peninsula with the view of Skye on my side and some little cottages on the way.

I reached the other of the Peninsula and was more than ready for some cream tea at Nanny´s in Shieldaig. If you´re ever in that area, don´t miss this cosy tearoom with the best view over Loch Shieldaig. Fresh and strengthened I was ready to explore this lovely little coastal town.

Founded in 1800 it was used to train seamen for the war against Napoleon. When he was sent to exile Shieldaig became a fishing village and a little gem in North Western Scotland.

  • Applecross Peninsula

My hosts at the Seadrift B&B not only make the very best porridge of all times, but they are also great at helping you to plan your tour! As I´ve been already to Skye in the main season last year I wanted to avoid that (and come back during more quiet times). I just knew I wanted to explore further north.

So they recommended to tour (and walk) around the Applecross peninsula – and what a stunning piece of North-Western Scotland it is. The drive over the pass isn´t that easy, thing super narrow streets and very tight curves but the view from up there is just gobsmacking! I only had a few seconds before the sky opened up and rain poured down but these few seconds…

Over the 2053’ road called the Bealach na Ba, if the cloud has lifted, you’ll see the kind of views normally reserved only for mountaineers. Panoramas to the Outer Hebrides and South to the Kintail mountains will keep you gazing until you need to descend to the village for warmth and sustenance. (Applecross.co.uk)

Back on the other side, I arrived at the Applecross bay and the sun was back. There are a few crofting villages scattered around the coastline and the name “Applecross” is about 1300 years old.

The area around Applecross is believed to be one of the earliest settled parts of Scotland. The coastal settlement of Sand, just to the north of Applecross, is the location of a major archaeological site. (Visitscotland)
