Nel blu dipinto di blu
Did you know that Italy became third at the Eurovision Songcontest with “Volare? Then sang by Domenico Modugno.
“Field of Flowers” – what a picturesque name for a square. It remains from the Middle Ages when this place in Rome was still a meadow. In 1869 the daily vegetable and fish market moved from Piazza Navona to Campo de´Fiori.
The ancient fountain (“La Terrina” – the soupbowl) was once used to water the cattle and now keeps the flowers fresh – have a look at the inspription saying “Fa del ben e lassa dire” (do good and let them talk), isn´t that perfect for such a gossip heaven, like a market?!
The square is surrounded by lots and lots of cafés, have some breakfast or just caffé and watch the happenings in front of you! And Campo de´Fiori is a great place to get some little gifts to take home like spices or my favourite: all the different sundried tomatoes, such a huge variety to choose from!
Even that Rome isn´t that long ago I´m missing having tons and tons of caffé. Don´t get me wrong I love the viennese Kaffeehaus and spend way too much time there but the italian way of having a caffé at the bar is something else. Lucky me I´ll be soon back in bella italia! Until then in June I´ll just dream of the caffé…
