  • Up and down – Vomero

On top of the Quartieri Spagnoli sits Vomero watching over the city. Offering the most stunning view on the bay of naples, beautiful buildings and lots and lots of stairs…

It used to be farmland and looks back on a agricultural tradition – something you would expect when you visit this urban area today. It was the nobility that made their way up the hill, trying to escape the plague in the narrow streets of the city in 1656 and looking for fresh air and tranquility. The hill stayed tranquil until the opening of the first two funiculars in the mid 19th century – they still run. The city above (città alta) was connected with the city below (cittá bassa) with steps – a lot of them! “Le Scale di Napoli” – the stairways of Naples.

  • Lungomare di Napoli

On my second day in Naples I just walked around, first down through the Quartieri Spagnoli and then went just along the Lungomare. Passing Castell del`Ovo until I reached Chiaia, a more “noble” area of Naples. Such a beautiful promenade with lots and lots of cafés and Osterias to take a little rest.

  • Palazzo Zevallos

On my daily walk through Via Toledo I always saw this advertisment for Caravaggios supposed last painting “Martirio di Sant’ Orsola” (The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula) at Palazzo Zevallos – as I always have been quite fascinated by the story of Saint Ursula and admire Caravaggios work I simply had to visit.

At this time there was a music festival going on in Naples and as soon as I entered the Palazzo I was created by a piano concert and stopped some time to listen to the music (and admire the amazingly beautiful glass ceiling).

Built in the late 1630ies the Palazzo was bought by the Banca Commerciale Italiana in the late 19th century and reconstructed (a marble staircase installed and the glass ceiling over the inner courtyard). Since 2014 it serves as a museum.
