    Movies

Doune Castle looks very familiar to many, it´s been used for movies and tv-shows for many years. From “Ivanhoe” (Liz Taylor 1952 & BBC Adaption 1996) to “Monty Python & the Holy Grail”, “Game of Thrones” and more recently “Outlander”.

    History

Doune Castle was built at the end of the 1300s for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany. The exact date of construction is not known and it is believed that the end result is not exactly what was originally planned. But the combination of buildings that emerged met all the military and domestic requirements of a royal castle. (Undiscovered Scotland)

It was probably (partly) destroyed in the Scottish Wars of Independence and rebuilt in the 14th century and hasn´t changed much since then. In 1425 the castle was passed to the crown and used as a royal hunting lodge (Mary Queen of Scots stayed several times in the suite of rooms above the kitchen) and dower house until it became the property of the Earls of Moray in the late 16th century.

Restoration was undertaken in 1883 and further repairs were made in 1970. In 1984, the 20th Earl of Moray placed the castle in the care of the nation. (Undiscovered Scotland)

Even so there many other visitors I wouldn´t have wanted to miss this place, Doune Castle really gives you an impression about life in these castles and you almost can feel the big banquets and parties happening.

Just a short drive from Fort William lies Glen Coe – one of the most scenic glens in the Highlands but with one of the bloodiest past. The village Glencoe is situated on the site of the of the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692 when 38 members of the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed on behalf of King William III.

I only went through the village to reach Glencoe Lochan, a little lake and forest, which was plantedfrom the Pacific Northwest of Canada in the 19th century.

After acquiring the Glencoe Estate in 1895, Donald Alexander Smith and his wife, Isabella Sophia Hardisty, moved from Canada to Scotland. Soon after their arrival, Isabella became increasingly homesick for her ancestral lands in Canada. In an attempt to abate his wife’s depression, Donald Alexander Smith had this forest painstakingly planted, and granted it to her as a private refuge. (Wikipedia)

I had planned to do a quick picknick with a view of Eilean Donan Castle but the weather wasn´t quite in the mood for that. But I still enjoyed looking at this Scottish beauty I´ve already known from so many movies.

Eilean Donan ( Eilean Donnain) Is a small island in the Scottish Highlands where three lochs meet:  Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh. The picturesque castle is often described as the most beautiful in Scotland and is connected with a stone bridge to the mainland since a renovation in the 20th century.

The castle was founded in the thirteenth century, and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan MacRae. In the early eighteenth century, the Mackenzies’ involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led in 1719 to the castle’s destruction by government ships. Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap’s twentieth-century reconstruction of the ruins produced the present buildings (Wikipedia)

The village Dornie about one kilometre from the castle. The castle was rebuilt between 1919 and 1932 and included the construction of the arched stone bridge. The rebuilding followed the exact ground plan but details of the present castle differ from its original appearance.

I didn´t feel the need to go inside (and visit during the day) but came back the next day in the evening. When the official opening times are over one is allowed to cross the bridge for free and walk around the island – and there were way fewer people than during the day!
