  • Along the way to Dornie

    My final destination for this day way a B&B near Eilean Donan Castle, my most northern stop for this time. But there was still a little way to drive and a few things to see. For tea I choose the “Castle Stalker view” – a lovely little restaurant with the best view of Castle Stalker.

    Set on an island in Loch Laich Castle Stalker is privately owned, even though they now offer tours to the castle during the summer (which I only found out right, but that´s a good reason to go back there another time).

    Driving around moody lochs and being stopped by boats going through a lock.

    And again we were stopped by heavy transport – there were some wings going by…

    Finally the first view of Eilean Donan Castle, which I´ve known already from so many movies and tales.

    It was raining cats and dogs when I arrived at the Seadrift B&B and lucky me, otherwise I would have missed this special greeting!

    The Skye Bridge, connecting Skye to the mainland was only a few minutes drive, but this time I saw Skye only from this side!

    I said goodbye to my cosy little hut at  Glenwhan Garden and started a long driving day up north in the direction of Bellanoch. But there was time for a few breaks like this one at Inveraray Castle. It might seem familiar if you watch the period drama “Downton Abbey”, it´s the Scottish home of Lady Rose played by Lily James and the whole Crawley family came for a visit at the end of season three.

    In real life, Inveraray Castle is the home of Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell and maybe of the most beautiful castles, lying in a stunning garden. Even so, there´s been a castle on the shores of Loch Fyne since the 1400s, this one was built in the 1700s inspired by a sketch by Vanbrugh, the architect of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.

    This huge kitchen impressed me probably the most, besides the garden and stunning surroundings.

    The family entry into the house and garden – or the spot where Anna & Bates found a crying & smoking Lady Rose.

  • Slaters Bridge

    A bus brought me from Liverpool to Manchester Airport where I picked up my travel companion for the next weeks. Together we started our road trip to the Lake District. After some hours of driving, we arrived at High Park Farm, my home for the next days. Situated in the lovely valley of Little Langdale a little evening stroll just had to be done!

    My lovely hosts Tony and Wendy had pointed out some places of interests but to be honest, it was just gorgeous in any direction! A lot of the area and the cottages are owned by the National Trust, often having been gifted by Beatrix Potter. Little Langdale used to be an intersection of packhorse routes around the Lake District. In 2012 the picturesque valley was used for filming “Snow White and the Huntsman”.

    It´s almost hard to believe that the area has been heavily mined and quarried over the last centuries, in particular for copper and slate.

    First view of Slater´s Bridge – an ancient, handmade footbridge (and maybe small packhorses) crossing river Brathay. Probably used by the mine workers to get to the mines and quarries.

    On my way back I came across this tree with coins in it, something I already saw in the last view days. But even my hosts didn´t know why people do it and how this tradition started. Is it for luck? If you know, let me know!
