  • Giardino della Marinaressa – #maximaCOMEPASS

While strolling around the Arsenale I stumbled upon an exhibition of the American sculptor Carole A. Feuerman in the Giardino della Marinaressa.

It´s only one of four simultaneously shows going on in Venice of the artist – the sculptures are colourful like the houses in Burano and it took me a while to realize that they are actually sculptures and not real human being sitting and standing in these beautiful surroundings.

Carole A. Feuerman is recognized as a pioneering figure in the world of hyperrealist sculpture. Together with Hanson and De Andrea, Feuerman is one of the three artists that started the Hyperrealism movement in the late seventies by making sculptures portraying their models in a life-like manner. Dubbed ‘the reigning doyenne of super-realism’ by art historian John T. Spike, Feuerman has solidified her place in art history. (Carole A. Feuerman)

It was interesting to see these artworks and even to see how people interact with them. Like me trying to figure out from the distance if these are real people or art or both and then connecting with the figures up close.

In the next garden, I found some turtles from the Seychelles and a massive Rhino – a very special one… somehow taking in its surrounding but still shielding itself from them.

From the outdoor exhibitions of the Biennale to the normal Venetian life and streets. Like the Cannareggio the Arsenale is a residential and very quiet area. The perfect place to escape the busy life around San Marco.

  • Morning in Cannaregio

Cannaregio is probably one of my favourite areas of Venice, even so, I´m gonna say this about any other area of Venice. It´s the biggest one of the six sestieri (quarters) and the one with the biggest population. There aren´t actually that many people still living in Venice, except in Cannaregio and Arsenale, which are the most residential areas.

Got my first caffé in the morning right around the corner of my Airbnb place and was ready to go!

Before the railway, the Cannaregio Canal was the main route into the city, the area grew mainly with working-class housing and manufacturing. Beginning in 1516 Jews must live the Jewish ghetto, the oldest one in the world. It was Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797 who allowed Jews to live wherever they want and set an end to their daily restrictions after he had conquered the Venetian Republic.

  • Punta della Dogana

venice, italy, punta della dogana, ursula schmitz, meet me in venice, destination, travel

La Punta della Dogana – the point where Canale Grande meets Giudecca Canal and you have one of the best views in Venice: San Marco on the left, Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore in front and Giudecca on the left. Be there at sunset!

This triangular area of Venice consists of several buildings:  Santa Maria della Salute, Patriarchal Seminary of Venice, and Dogana da Mar and is located on the tip of an island in the Dorsoduro district. La Punta della Dogana is the art museum inside the Dogana da Mar building, which hosts one half of the Damien Hirst exhibition at the moment – another reason I wanted to come to Venice in November.

When you´re crossing la Ponte dell´Accademia don´t forget to stop for a minute (or longer) and enjoy the view over Canale Grande.
