It was super hot when I registered for this Instawalk by the IgersAustria – and visiting the “cold rooms” of the University of Music seemed like a dream. And then there was something about visiting the St. Ursula Church as well – until then I didn´t even know there is one in Vienna. And whenever something bears my name, I have to visit it! And even so, the heatwave is on a break at the moment it´s always nice to get to know new places and “cool rooms”.

From 1666 to 1745 the cloister was built with several yards and spacious buildings. The nuns came to Vienna in 1660 on an invitation of the empress Eleonore and opened a school. The adjoining church was built from 1673 to 1675.

Filled with baroque elements, stucco and some stunning chandeliers. Even so, the convent building was sold to the Republic of Austria in 1960 the church is still in use as a church. But also as a classroom and concert location. Organist Hans Haselböck saw the nuns moving out (to Liesing where their school still exists) and convinced the rector of the University of Music to use the buildings and the church as their Institut of organ music and ecclesiastical music.

A new organ was installed and the rooms adapted for their new use. Do you recognize the city on the painting on the right? It´s a portrait of Vienna!

Our walk had started with a little organ concert by one of the students and after visiting the catacombs and the church we went back to another room and another organ – number 5 by now. It´s the most modern one, built in Vorarlberg with about a thousand pipes.

Big thank you to the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst and the Igersaustria.at!

  • A weekend in Dresden

Last Friday I boarded one of the brandnew Hellö-buses on to Dresden. Who had though that about 7 hours on a bus aren´t as bad as imagined, even without a working wlan most of the time – or maybe because of that? As this trip has been a quite spontanious one, going by bus was the cheapest way and it brought me safe and sound to a sunny Dresden.

As the only thing I had on my to-do-list for Dresden was visiting the Zwinger, I just wandered around old town and Neustadt, had a picknick on the Elbwiesen and enjoyed some music on the ongoing city-celebrations. Whenever I´m in a former communist town, I´m quite fascinated by the contrast of the really old monuments/buildings and the ones from the 60ies/70ies/80ies – baroque meets Plattenbau.

I probably spent most of my time walking on the terraces of the Zwinger – looking at all the different statues and all these beautiful details. From cheeky little angels and trolls to a more secret “garden” with some even more cheeky ladies…

And back outside to the Semperopera making bold statements!

  • Baroque Baroque – Olafur Eliasson

Thanks to the Igersvienna I had the opportunity to visit the new exhibition by Olafur Eliasson in the Winterpalais some days ago – to be honest I didn´t know Eliasson before but visiting the Winterpalais in the first district has been on my to-do-list for a long time!

Despite of having no idea on what to expect I was hook as soon as I entered the building. This light installation was simply perfect to leave the city outside behind and getting ready to explore the meeting of modern art and baroque! It even got better on the staircase bathed in yellow light, which elimanted all the other colours and made the expirence even more surreal.

Entering the state rooms one was greeted by the beautiful “New Berlin Sphere”, (2009) which leaded to a room of your own colourful silhouette(s):

Entering even more breathtaking rooms – Prince Eugene did know how to have the most stunning Palais bulit – with two Vincenzo Coronelli Coronelli Globes (1688 / 1693) from the Augustiner Chorherrenstift Vorau. Every large library had to have globes during the Baroque era.

Beautiful chandeliers everywhere but I really did fell in love with the one in the red “room”
