Welcome to Shetland & Inner Hebrides 2023!
I started my stay in Shetland with a very special boat trip to the Isle of Foula.
This remote island lying 20 miles west of the Shetland Mainland covers five square miles and has five distinctive peaks, including one of the highest sheer sea cliffs in Britain – Da Kame (1,233ft). (Shetland.org)
The boat ride took about one hour until we arrived in Foula to pick up our guide and continue around the island.
The sea was pretty choppy that day and we couldn´t get as close to the cliffs as our captain wanted, it was still an impressive sight.
The Kame – 376m high sea cliffs. It is filled with all kinds of birds nesting there in the summertime.
Back on land, we got a little introduction about Foula from the local ranger. Currently, 38 people are living in Foula, plus thousands of birds and lots of Foula sheep.
The local seals also came to greet us.
From the harbour, I started the walk along the cliffs toward the airstrip.
The cliffs were filled with these cotton balls or troll´s wool like they are called in Shetland.
And then there were the puffins – I spent hours just watching them.
