I think the Mercato Metropolitano was opened for the EXPO or the time of the EXPO, but I do hope it will be continued – it´s simply amazing! Situated in the Navigli area the market offered street food, coffee, sweets of all kind and much more! Produced by small farmers and small craftsman from around Milan. The perfect place to let the world go by, enjoy some delicious food and good company.
Ever since I saw the first pictures from the EXPO in Milan somewhen in April I wanted to go there and explore all the ideas on how “Feed the Planet. Energy for Life”!
Expo Milano 2015 talks about the problems of nutrition and the resources of our planet. The idea is to open up a dialogue between international players, and to exchange views on these major challenges which impact everyone. (expo2015.org)
The first trip was scheduled for June but had to be cancelled some hours before I was supposed to go. But this time I made it – unfortunately it started raining as soon as I entered the area, guess who didn´t bring an umbrella.
The EXPO area was located a little bit outside Milan, for getting there I took the tram to see more of the city. It was a short walk from the last stop to the entrances and almost felt a little deserted – empty parking space, only two open doors and very little people. I already imagined to be all by myself!
This dream was crashed only minutes later – there were so, so, so many people! One had to wait in line for everything, to enter the Pavillions, to have a caffè, to buy something to eat, go to the toilette – queues everywhere! As I really wanted to visit the Austrian Pavillion I got in line, which was one time around the building and finally one hour later I could BREATHE.
There was another pavillion I definately wanted to visit: the bee hive (UK) – lucky me I only had to wait for 30 minutes!
I tried to go inside some other ones, like the “Pavilion Zero” but I was wet, I was cold, I was hungry, there were way to many people and a bath tup was waiting for me in my milanese apartement – 5 hours at the Expo were enough, even that I had planned to stay a whole day…
…. but I got some more EXPO-feeling in Milan later on at the amazing food-market in Navigli!
If you´re in Vienna on October 1st you should definately have breakfast, 2nd breakfast (Jause), lunch, coffee & cake (Kaffejause), more coffee, dinner and drinks at all these amazing bars, cafés, retaurants supporting the “lokale hilfe wien“. All of these 98 (by this day, I´m sure there will be more than 100 in the end) amazing places will donate 50% of that days income to Caritas Wien and Ute Bock. And most of their staff will be donating their wages and tips!
