  • Tiree Gin School

Learning how to make gin in Tiree.

Let´s learn how to make gin! The Isle of Tiree distillery offers a gin school, and I had to try my hand at making my very own gin. I spent a fun afternoon with a few others, tasting and making gin.

While our gin was “brewing” we got a little tour of the distillery. Sleeping whisky barrels.

And back to our own little gin stations – it takes quite a while for the alcohol to distil and then needs to be combined with water at the right measurements.

And my finished bottle – a Hebridean summers day!

  • Harris Distillery

Visit to the Harris Distillery, tasting gin and whisky and having a tour around the distillery.

During my stay in Tarbert, I had to do a tasting tour of the Isle of Harris Distillery – when I was in Scotland in 2019 I bought a bottle of gin, just because I liked the bottle. It tasted amazing and I found out that this gin had won many awards – it was the Isle of Harris gin. One of the many reasons I wanted to visit Harris & Lewis.

The Isle of Harris Distillers is a “Social Distillery” founded with the idea of not only creating amazing spirits but also offering jobs and keeping the young people on the island.

Founded in September 2015 the distillery now employs almost 40 permanent staff, a quite significant number on an island with around 2000 inhabitants.

The goal was to create an amazing whisky, but as whisky takes time, as much as it needs it,  gin was produced and is now loved & celebrated around the world.

From the cosy peat fire by the entrance we made out way up to the tasting room and even got a bit of the young uisge beatha (the spirit) to taste. It reminded me a bit of our Austrian Schnaps.

We were also able to visit the stills rooms, they were nice and warm and learned more of how to make whisky and gin.

When will the whisky be ready? When it is ready!

The Harris gin is completely produced in and around Harris, it gets it special taste from Kelp, which is also harvested on the cliffs of Harris.

Another iconic image of Harris, but unfortunately Tarbert Shop closed before my first visit to Harris.

  • Be my valentine.. or not!

valentines day, flowers, spring, tulips, pretty, vienna

Tomorrow is Valentine’s day and you might be in need of some ideas for a present or just some tips how to spend the day or maybe ignore it. Do whatever you´ll like to do!

Walking by this flower shop on behind St. Stephens cathedral makes me always happy, every time they have these lovely arrangements in front of their store. It brightens up every grey and moody day in Vienna.

There are two options around the corner – first go to Haas & Haas and get some tea. “Highland Toffee” is an old favourite of mine and then turn around two or three corners until you´ve reached Altmann & Kühne. They not only have the cutest packages but also the best tiny pralines!

Walk through all the narrow little streets around Graben and Kärntnerstrasse until you reach the Albertina. Kissing the Muses, dancing around the Hall of the Muses is always a good idea and don´t forget to say hi to Monet!

It´s about time for some coffee! And you probably know that Vienna has an abundance of great Kaffeehäuser! From old to modern to hip and cosy – there is one (or more) for everyone! Some of my favourites are Alt Wien, Phil, Josephine, Kleines Café and many more!

Are we in the mood for another museum? The Art history Museum at Maria Theresien Platz is another one you don´t wanna miss! “The Stairway to Klimt” is opening today and will bring you eye to eye with Klimt’s work in the main staircase.
